Today is the day

We will (hopefully) sign everyhting for our new-home-loan today!
I am kind of nervous, but I think it's going to be ok. I hope everything is going to work out like we planned (haha).
And then, after all is said and done and we just have to wait until the house is done!
I can't wait to move out of our place and into the new one!

Pornography

Ok, I found two very explicit stories on Ananova, that I would like to share with you.

The first is of a scientific photo contest:

The second story is about a Russian ad campaign:

Judge for yourself.....

I'm back!!

Well, I finally made it back to work today.
We got lucky considering the damage in our neighborhood. Our power was back by Friday but we didn't have any cable TV for a while!!!!
So I had two free days off, but had to take two additional days because my husband thought it'll be funny to get some kind of infection and being totally sick for now....
I guess he got it from standing in the rain helping neighbors with sandbags.
Now though, the kids are back in school (FINALLY!!!). Our oldest goes to school in Hampton and so he wasn't picked up until yesterday.
Now I only have to get my husband back to normal and then we're good.

Other than that, I don't have anything to say.
I've been reading other blogs to catch up and will continue to do that for today.

Isabel

Well, Isabel seems to be really coming over here.
I will leave work early tomorrow, which I wanted to do anyways, since I was planning on getting everything set for the mortgage, but I guess I reschedule that.
After that, I don't really know what to expect...I have enough water and food and batteries etc. I just have to get gas on my way home tonight.

Es wird ernst

Hurrikan Isabel kommt.
Naja. Augen zu und durch.

Finally!!

Well, I posted it already earlier in German, but since I don't have anything else to do now, I figured I might as well post it in English too.

Yesterday we finally bought a house! This is my first house ever, but my husband used to have one before we met. It is not going to be ready until March, so I'll have to sit on the edge of my seat and wait. And, while I'm doing that I get to pick out the color of the carpet etc. How fun.
I was a nervous wreck the last couple of days and still don't know how to feel exactly. I guess they call it "Buyer's Remorse".... But, I'm happy and can't wait.
It is just the house we wanted. We didn't want any of the colonial style houses, that you see everywhere in this area. Those are different and cool. Much better.

Erdbeben in Tokio?

Kottge.org has a very interesting post about codeswitching, meaning conversations where people switch between languages. The comments are very interesting.

Friday Five

1. Is the name you have now the same name that's on your birth certificate? If not, what's changed?
No, my last name changed wne I got married.

2. If you could change your name (first, middle and/or last), what would it be?
I wouldn't change it.

3. Why were you named what you were? (Is there a story behind it? Who specifically was responsible for naming you?)
My dad named me. he always wanted a girl and then I came along. I don't think that he had any specific reason for giving me the name I have. I should ask him.

4. Are there any names you really hate or love? What are they and why?
I really love the names of my children-to-be....but since I don't have any kids and don't even know if I ever have any I don't really get too excited about them :-(

5. Is the analysis of your name at kabalarians.com accurate? How or how isn't it?
Your first name of Corinna has made you a sociable person who appreciates the beauties of nature and the refinements of life, and is moved by music and the arts. You are very idealistic and romantic within yourself and may have tried to express your beautiful thoughts through poetry or writing. Crudeness and vulgarity are very repulsive to you and you are very particular about little things. You suffer greatly with lack of confidence and self-consciousness. You crave affection and understanding, yet because you can be so easily and deeply hurt, you have learned to keep your true nature hidden; therefore people do not really know you. You always wonder if you are doing the right thing, desiring to express yourself but afraid to. People may consider you haughty and aloof because of your sensitivity and reserved ways. You may find some expression abut it would usually be light conversation, rarely daring to reveal your deeper thoughts or take others into your confidence for fear of criticism or ridicule. You have a very kind and gentle nature, and although you may be in a position in contact with the public, you will still be a lonely and reserved person. Thus, you live much within your own thoughts, often finding your escape in reading, which you love to do.

OK, I am not really sociable. I am not a tree hugger, but I like being outside. I am not creative at all and don't write poetry or anything, except for this. I amparticualr about little things, but I am married to a sailor and I can course like one. I don't think I have a lack of confidence. I really do need attention, but more like touching me or holding me. But people know me, especially the ones close to me. I am not too sensitive. I hate being criticized but I tell you what I feel, just don't respond. I really do care about other people. specially our neighboors and we try to hepl them out as much as we can. I also love getting presents for other people. I read a lot, but that's because I sit on the Metro for an hour twice a day.

Tuesday, September 09, 2003

CNN.com - Giant asteroid could hit Earth in 2014

Well, I am not really into science but I am fascinated by space and, of course, headlines such as these.
The funny thing is, that just after it says that a GIANT asteroid could hit earth it says:
But for those fearing Armageddon, don't be alarmed -- the chances of a catastrophic collision are just one in 909,000.
Then why write a headline like that?

CNN.com - Agent: Police did their best for man wearing bomb

I have been meaning to post on this story ever since I heard about it last night (I haven't watched TV all weekend long!!!).
That is the strangest thing I have ever heard and I can't imagine having anything like that happening to me.
Who would do anything like that? And believe they could get away with that?
I hope they solve this because it is somewhat irritating that, whoever did this, is still out there and could possibly do this to somebody else.

The Friday Five

1. Are you going to school this year?
No, not really. I am taking some online preparation courses for some certificates.
I just graduated in January.

2. If yes, where are you going (high school, college, etc.)? If no, when did you graduate?
I went to George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia.

3. What are/were your favorite school subjects?
In High School I always loved Math, Chemistry, and PE.

4. What are/were your least favorite school subjects?
I hated French, but mainly because of this stupid teacher I had.

5. Have you ever had a favorite teacher? Why was he/she a favorite?
I have a couple of teachers and professors that I really like. My High School class still meets with my last HS teacher every year. Unfortunately I don't live in Germany anymore but in the US so I am never able to attend.
I just like when a teacher loves teaching and doesn't see it as a job to make money. You can tell when someone likes to teach.

Lights out in London

Just came across this on Sky News. The US doesn't seem to be the only nation that has a power problem. But, of course, we don't know yet what exactly happened.

A Tube spokesman said: "There has been a National Grid failure which has affected the underground.

The failure is thought to have happened at around 6.15pm.

A spokesman for electricity network operator EDF Energy said: "We have lost supplies to large parts of south London in the last few minutes as a result of a National Grid failure supply in the south London area.

UPDATE: Seems like the power is back on in London.

List of books I have read so far (this year):

(not in any particular order)

- by John Grisham:
"The Summons"
"The Partner"
"The Runaway Jury"
"A Time to Kill"
"The Street Lawyer"
"The Testament"
"The Brethren"
"A Painted House"

...I think that's it for now?

- by David Lodge:
"Thinks"
"Small World"
"Changing Places"
"Nice Work"
"Therapy"
"Paradise News"

- by Stephen Fry:
"Revenge"

- by George Orwell:
"Animal Farm"

I know there are more, but I have to get it all together.
To be continued...

New Feature

I was really bored today, so I added a few more things to this blog to make it...more interesting, I guess.
I added The Weather Pixie, which I always thought, was kind of cool. I also out on the left bar, way below my links and everything else, a link to the book I am currently reading.
Right now it is 1984 by George Orwell.
I start a new book about every two weeks. I have never read this many books in my life, but ever since I started working I am in the Metro about 2 hours each day and I read....
So, if anyone wants to comment/discuss the books that I have read/am currently reading, or even suggest a book, please feel free to do so.

I will soon try to post a list of books I have read since the beginnig of the year.

Hier bin ich am Samstag

...aber das ist, was der Wetterfrosch sagt....
Na, dann mal Prost!

Shall I stay or shall I go???

Back to Work!!!

Too bad that the weekend is over.

This weekend was so much fun. On Saturday we went to the Farmer's Market in Old Towne Alexandria, VA. Anybody that lives in the DC Metro Area needs to go there. It's early (6AM to 9AM),but it's worth it. They have really nice flowers, pastries and all kinds of other stuff. It's around the fountain in front of the courthouse (?).
We then went to Annapolis, MD. That is such a great city. We had the best lunch ever and enjoyed the best weather possible. I never had a whole crab before. I am not really the biggest seafood fan, but I just loved it. I don't know why we never went before. It is so close.

Well, next Saturday we'll go to King's Dominion!!!! Right now, they say it's supposed to rain, but I am still hoping.

In other news.....
This weekend will finally be another Formula One race in Hungary. I am anxious to see if Ralf's appeal will work. In my own opinion it wasn't his fault at all. Well we'll see Wednesday afternoon, when the FIA will announce its decision.
For more information about Formula One, I find this site really good...Especially the live ticker.

I am back!!!!!

Well...I have been back for a couple of days, but I didn't really feel like posting anything...

But I had a lot of fun last week in good-old-Germany. One week is way too short. So, I am planning my trip for Christmas, which should keep me busy for a while.
I just can't wait until I finally move back. Its funny, because I tell people, and they don't understand. I hear "Well, don't you like it here?" Yes, I love it, but I am sooooooooooo far away from everybody over there that I could live in paradise and I still would want to go back. So, I will just do that...in about 2 years or so.

Anyway, just wanted to post real quick before this week is over.

Tuesday, July 29, 2003

I am lazy

Well, this is not the first time I write this, but I have to admit that I am very lazy. I can't believe it has been 11 days since I last posted anything.

Well, what happened....Not really anything, but I can already say that Thursday will be the last time I am able to post until the 11th.......Because I am FINALLY going to Germany!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, that has been on my mind lately, which is not really interesting unless I am posting my shopping list, to-do list, packing list, and the "you-have-to-make-sure-you-bring-this" list.

So, I will try (I really will try..) to post a little more these last few days....Sorry

How could they??????

I just read this really disturbing article on CNN:

Hospitals accused of skewing liver transplant priority list

My neighbor's son, who was 17 month old, just died this weekend of liver failure. Ever since he was born he waited for a liver transplant, but he just didn't make it, because there was not one available for him.
A story like this really pisses me of. Who do they think they are? Is someone more privileged to receive a liver than others?

Officials said there was no evidence that anyone died for lack of a transplant, but available livers are in short supply, and only the most seriously ill patients are eligible.

Of course, someone died because of this. How many people died while this was going on?

Time's Changing For Lance

I have been following the Tour de France pretty consistent and am happy to announce that Lance s about to get his butt kicked. I like Armstrong, but deep down inside I am German and therefore I am hoping the Jan Ulrich will win this one.
Just 34 seconds behind the current leader, I am pretty certain that Ulrich will get there.

Powerball

Ok, if everything goes as planned I wil be 11 million dollars richer tomorrow night.....That is, if our office pool wins the powerball jackpot, which is at about 250 million right now.
Hmmm...............just thinking about what I could do with that money. Oh, well, I am not going to win anyway. But it's fun to dream.

PS: Of course, if I win I won't tell anyone because I will turn into a greedy and mean bitch...but at least I am honest.

Feeling lucky!!!!!

Ok, I just got an e-mail and it said that if you go to Google and type in "Weapons of Mass Destruction" and click the "I'm feeling lucky" button something really funny comes up...and it does.

Try it.

I'm back Part II

Ok, this is true now...

I have been in a lot of stress lately and so I had some other priorities.

First, I got into a car accident....With a stupid Pizza delivery guy...Guess who was at fault there??? Well, so I had to deal with insurances and all that.
Then, it got somewhat stressy at work and we have been having my husband's granddaughter with us for the last week which takes a lot of time too.
Anyways, no excuses...I will REALLY start to post again...Promise

Not that I had anything profound to say/write anyway, so I guess it's OK.

Friday Five

Answer the following five questions in your weblog or journal. Make sure you leave a comment here with a link to your post (or just leave your answers in the comments section).

1. Is your hair naturally curly, wavy, or straight? Long or short?
It's pretty straight, maybe somewhat wavy...

2. How has your hair changed over your lifetime?
It was always short. Then, when I was about 12 I decided to let it grow. I then had very, very long hair, and had ALL cut off when I was 20 (really short). Now I am letting it grow again and swore to never ever cut it off again....

3. How do your normally wear your hair?
Pony tail.

4. If you could change your hair this minute, what would it look like?
Thicker hair, maybe longer....

5. Ever had a hair disaster? What happened?
No, not that I can remember.

I am going to be a weather-woman

That must be the greatest job in the world....
You say how YOU THINK the weather is going to be and if you say it'll be sunny and then it rains, nobody cares. You keep your job even though you are completely clueless. perfect.
the only thing weather forecasters are right about is the CURRENT weather, which I can see (feel) for myself and I don't need some stupid idiot to tell me.
I love one expression one of the local ones used last year: "zone of uncertainty" , that is true.

Well, I just wanted to post something and I couldn't think of anything. So, since the weather is so perfect here in wonderful DC, that was the only topic coming to my mind.

Is he really lucky?????

This guy went through a lot. I don't know if I would call him lucky....maybe, but it seems he had to endure a lot so far.
Well, it's a good story anyway.
Funny, it makes you think if there is really something such as fate???????

17. Juni 1953 / June 17th 1953

Sehr lesenswert.

Deutsche Welle has something about it in English.
It really is very interesting and worth to take the time to read it.

Hab meine Wunschliste schon fertig!!!!!

This is just disgusting

Ok, I could even believe that it is possible to become pregnant at 80, but just thinking about this 80-year old woman and her 85-year old husband together.........

Off for the weekend!!!!

Ok, I am done for this week.
I will be back on Monday. Enjoy your weekend.

Friday Five

Answer the following five questions in your weblog or journal. Make sure you leave a comment here with a link to your post (or just leave your answers in the comments section).

1. What's one thing you've always wanted to do, but never have?
Bungee Jumping.
I know a lot of people might say that but I really always wanted to do it and tried but something always went wrong and I couldn't do it. Now I gave up. Maybe one day I'll get the opportunity and I will just jump.

2. When someone asks your opinion about a new haircut/outfit/etc, are you always honest?
I try to but in a nice way. it depends on the person. Some people do not take it well and then I just try to make them feel good....as long as they don't look completely stupid, then I have to tell them.

3. Have you ever found out something about a friend and then wished you hadn't? What happened?
I don't think so. I can't recall anything like that every happen to me. Sorry.

4. If you could live in any fictional world (from a book/movie/game/etc.) which would it be and why?
Kafka describes really interesting "worlds" and I think I would enjoy to be in it, but only for a certain amount of time.

5. What's one talent/skill you don't have but always wanted?
Playing the piano. I have a very good friend whose dad played the piano in Jazz bars and she started when she was 6. I always make her play something for me when I see her. It sounds so beautiful.

It's official

I am going to Germany this summer!!!!!!!
I am so thrilled I could pee my pants. Went online this morning and booked everything and now I only need those tickets in my hand and I am complete. Finally, after 2 1/2 years I am going to Germany!!!!! It will be so much fun, seeing my family and friends.
Even though, it's only a week I will enjoy it!!!!!
What a great way to start the weekend.

Sadness from the sandbox

LT Smash has a very sad story about a Sergeant in his camp. It's not very long so you have to read it.
How can anyone do this? I feel so sorry for that woman. here she is, fighting for other peoles' freedom and that is what she gets. Makes me sick.

Site Meter Info

I just played around with my site meter a little and found out that I can see where the (few) people that ever visited this site are at. There are some in Asia and South America, which I did not expect at all. But then, we're on the Internet so I guess you should expect that. It just surprised me and I would like to welcome anyone from anywhere that is lucky enough to come across this little blog. Thank you.

Another accident

The Washington Post reports that another train accident killed six people in Germany.
I don't know, but it seems like train and bus accidents seem to become an everyday event now....
Yesterday I heard on the local Hamburg radio station Radio Hamburg that many buses were checked yesterday and most of them had something wrong with them!! One driver was even drunk!!! I can't find a story on this but I will provide a link if I find one.

Something is going there......

I just read a breaking news headline (sorry no link yet) on N-TV that there was an explosion at some festival in Frankfurt and several people are injured.
This follows the bomb at the Dresden train station last Friday and the bomb scare today at the Cologne train station...

More later.....

Update:
I apologize. it was an accident.
Here is the link on N-TV (Sorry it's in German)

St. Pauli: Lizenz sicher

Liga bzw. Regional-Liga" singen koennen.
You'll never walk alone!

Must be a German thing....

I swear this happened to me before. I was working at a supermarket when I was in school and one night my boss just walked out and locked me and my friend in the store. So we opened the door to the office and triggered the alarm while my boss was still in the parking lot and was abkle to let us out and call police not to come.
I know this is different but it reminded me of that one time.....

Guten Morgen!!!

Und das Wochenende ist schon wieder vorbei. Naja, was soll's.

Ok, I know I am a little late, but was looking around to see what other nations had to say about yesterday's death of the former German politician. It was very interesting to see what the different media outlets had to say about his person.

Washington Post:
Juergen Moellemann, 57, a former government minister accused of injecting anti-Semitism into last year's German election campaign and implicated in a party funding scandal, died in a parachute jump June 5 while prosecutors searched his home for evidence of financial wrongdoing.

Expatica:
The Arab world has lost a friend, supporter and businessman with the death of former German politician Juergen Moellemann.
Arab politicians and business partners in the Mideast welcomed his critical stance towards Israel, which caused political uproar in Germany last year and eventually led to his downfall.
The Arab world has lost a friend, supporter and businessman with the death of former German politician Juergen Moellemann.
"As president of the German-Arab society, Moellemann was a great advocate of Arab issues and has done a lot to promote economics," said Peter Goepfrich, head of the German-Arab Chamber of Commerce in Cairo.

Now those are only the beginnings of the articles but they are introducing the reader to Moellemann.

I just thought this was very interesting to see and since it is a very big topic in Germany right now I am somewhat interested in it as well.
I just wrote this very intelligent-sounding post and then my Internet explorer just closed....everything was gone. I had never written so much before and never anything so smart.
So, now I have to write it all over again........

Update: I swear I am really upset now.....I just wrote the whole thing again and posted it...and then I edited it and it's gone again.

Update II: Well, I juts realized that eventually it did post, but not until 10:47 PM?? I was surely not up and posting that late on a Friday. Well, I don't care. So I have it posted twice. Better luck next time.

I'm done

Ok, I think I'm done here,. I will log out and prepare myself for the weekend and will hopefully post again on Monday.

Langeweile

e-mail posting

I don't think I like posting via e-mail, though because it completely messed up the HTML. Putting links in there doesn't seem like a good idea to me since it took me forever to fix everything.
So, I guess I"ll only do it if I really have to.

Death of Juergen Moellemann

I know I am a little late with this but I look around today to see what other nations had to say about the sudden death of the former German politician. It is very interesting to see the differences.
I put together some examples from around the world here:

Expatica, Cairo:
The Arab world has lost a friend, supporter and businessman with the death of former German politician Juergen Moellemann.
Arab politicians and business partners in the Mideast welcomed his critical stance towards Israel, which caused political uproar in Germany last year and eventually led to his downfall.
"As president of the German-Arab society, Moellemann was a great advocate of Arab issues and has done a lot to promote economics", said Peter Goepfrich, head of the German-Arab Chamber of Commerce in Cairo.

Washington Post, Washington, DC:
Juergen Moellemann, 57, a former government minister accused of injecting anti-Semitism into last year's German election campaign and implicated in a party funding scandal, died in a parachute jump June 5 while prosecutors searched his home for evidence of financial wrongdoing.

Deutsch Welle:
Disgraced German politician dies in parachute jump
Juergen Meollemann, one of Germany's most controversial politicians, has fallen to his death in a parachute jump. Police are investigating the incident. His death came within hours of his home in Muenster, in the west of Germany, being raided and searched by prosecutors probing allegations he violated party funding rules. This followed closely on a ruling by the German parliament lifting his immunity from prosecution. He was a leading member of Germany's Free Democrat Party, but he quit in March over charges of anti-Semitism and irregular party funding. Eyewitnesses at the jump near the western town of Marl said Moellemann, an experienced skydiver who had served as a paratrooper in the German army, probably killed himself. Prosecutors had been investigating whether he hid party donations that financed a campaign leaflet criticizing Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

Just a try....

Ok, I just realized that I have never tried to e-mail my posts. According to blogger that is possible so I am trying to do that….

UPDATE: It works!!!!

Very interesting story

Rachel Lucas and OTB are both discussing a surprising story at UPI about the rising number of Jews returning to Germany.
If you have only a limited amount of time today to read anything, read it.

Now I understand!!!!

Dr Neal Barnard is trying to tell me that I am addicted to cheese. Well, certainly my husband would agree with that. Especially when I am sitting down with a nice glass of wine and my beloved gouda cheese (extra soft) and finish the whole piece by the end of the night....
So what? I am a junkie.

Needed a little change....

Well, as you can see, I needed a little change. I liked the template I used before but it was very confusing to work with. So I thought I should use something a little more simple and it works great. I have two blogrolls now. I basically split them up so that the German blogs are separate. Note: not all "German blogs" are in Germany, some are just based in Germany and discuss this.
So, I hope you like it. I do.

Great way to help the trops overseas

Kevin from The Primary Main Objective needs your help. Some tents at his camp burned down and some donations would be appreciated to help those who lost everything.
Thanks

quick apology

I just realized that the last three posts all started with "I"....oops.
I am really not that egocentric.

I am confused...

Ok, I talked to my brother the other day (he lives in Germany) and we thought it would be funny if we were both reading the same book and could talk about it then (very intelligent huh?)
Anyway, he told me the author (Stephen Fry) and the title in German (Der Sterne Tennisballe). and I thought I could simply find it on amazon.com...right?
Well, none of Stephen Fry's books on amazon have a title that sound remotely close to what my brother told me so.....I started reading the reviews and all that to figure out what the story was and then figured it must be "Revenge". I did search for "tennis balls" and did not find anything.
So, I ordered it (in hardcover, which I hate) and told my brother proudly this weekend. Well, he told em that the title in English, which also happens to be the original title is "The Stars' Tennis Balls". Really?
So today I have searching and searching and what did find: the US version is called "Revenge" and the British version is called "The Stars' Tennis Balls". How stupid is that? You can, by the way, order the British version on amzon.com..and it is a Paperback, but now I am stuck with my other copy. Well, I hope it's good.
So, if anyone is reading it too, I will probably start with it tomorrow, since it should arrive today.

UPDATE:
I did not order it in the Hardcover edition...I don't know why I thought I did, but I just checked and I will receive my beloved Paperback.

I figured it out.....

...why I am so lazy!!!
It has been raining pretty much all the time for about a week and the forecast doesn't look too good either. This is depressing. I can't really do anything outside and I usually love this time of the year because it is not too hot yet. But instead I look out of my window wondering if it will ever stop.
My plants look like shit. Our flower beds are falling apart and I can't do anything outside.
It is so frustrating.
So, that is why I am not motivated to do anything..not even blog.

I am soooo lazy....

Ok, I know I write this all the time when I have not blogged in a while but I really am lazy.
I am looking at my blog almost daily, simply because I am using the links, but then I don't want to think about anything that I could write about and so I don't....
Well, I will do better...but I first have to figure out what I am going to write.....

Hilfe!

Desperately seeking Airfare.....

How frustrating....
Finally I have some money so I can afford to visit my parents in Germany and everywhere I look the prices are soooo high. It is so frustrating. It has been about two and a half years since I have been home and I do not want to spend $ 800 or more to go over there for just a week.
So I heard that U.S. Airways has this great offer for military members and their immediate families called "Salute.." something.
Well, guess what....doesn't count between June and August for European Travel...as if anyone else wants to go there.....
So I am looking daily for any changes. Go to all the online travel sites. I am going to every airlines site I can think of....Lufthansa wants over $ 2000!!!! Now I am down to $ 790 with Swiss Air or whatever they call themselves and I am almost thinking that I will have to settle with this.....How frustrating. I was going to go back this Christmas but I don't even want to see how much that'll cost me.

Well...I am back.....with good news

I don't really know why it took me so long to finally post again. I guess I just didn't have the time to write anything.

I have something good to write about though.
I am German citizen and am married to an American (sailor). I have my green card an all that but I really wanted to become a naturalized citizen, However, I wanted to keep my German citizenship since at some point my husband and I would like to move to Germany.
So I felt kind of stuck since I thought I can't get one without giving up the other. But....I found out that Germany passed a law some time back which gives people, like me the opportunity to ask the German government for a special permission to keep the German citizenship and apply for the American one.....And...I also found out that I do NOT have to wait three or five years to apply for my citizenship because my husband serves in the Armed Service and therefore I receive special consideration!!!!!
I think that is so cool and I am so excited about this....now I have to get a million documents together and have them notarized and send the off along with 250 Euros to Germany...well, I gladly pay that.
So, maybe soon I too will be a real American!!!!!!
